I find that every year my students are so excited for February because it’s Black History Month! With help from Oriental Trading, my class was ready to learn about a few of the famous African American historical figures.
We started off our African American historical figure study by reading these Capstone Black History Readers. Before I let me students research online, these were a great tool for the students to read and discuss the lives of some inventors, athletes, and leaders of our past.
The students worked in pairs to research a historical figure of their choice. They worked in pairs to complete these Famous African American Writing Prompts. They come with 32 different people and they fold into little books! There was enough for each student to make their own, but I chose for them to work in pairs so they could collaborate and discuss the person they were researching.
Another helpful resource were the Black History Learning Charts. The students used the posters to read facts about the person they were researching, but they also would flip through them out of being interested. (What every teacher wants!!) These would also make adorable bulletin board accents.
This was a simple and meaningful project for Black History Month. The students enjoyed the books, posters, and especially the writing prompts to learn about their person of choice.
