It's that time of year again, when we all discuss our American heritage and bring into focus the lives of many famous African Americans who have contributed greatly to our society. In doing so, teachers want to make an impact on their students, get them excited and help them to retain information. Let us be your partner as you plan your next great teaching adventure! While I was teaching in a classroom, I discovered that little mementos, phrases, and songs helped spark memories for my students. They were reminders of classroom discussions we had shared with each other. I wish I had these bookmarks when I was in the classroom! They're a great way to help students recall information about prominent history figures and they tie into Black History Month lessons perfectly.
Other times, I used small classroom giveaways as an exit pass. I would ask a student a question about a specific topic we covered during the day. If they answered correctly, I would reward them with a small token. Sometimes I would pose two questions and allow the student to pick the one they wanted to answer to help them feel empowered.
Since February is a celebration of Black History, I would use these items as a reward once a week throughout the month. Be sure to check-out our great selection of classroom projects and activities for more curriculum ideas.
