Are you looking for a new way to celebrate reading in your classroom? Look no further than this baseball themed championship reading event! Download the free printables to help you create a simple scoreboard to keep track of each game. And get ready, the championship game will be full of popcorn and Double Bubble gum! This event will for sure be a hit with all readers in your classroom as they head up with their decorated DIY pennant and baseball souvenirs.

Create a baseball scoreboard using kraft paper roll, Crayola markers, Sharpies, DIY pennant, and popcorn bags. I decided to put my scoreboard on a bulletin board to make it easier to assemble. Make sure you download the free printables to help you create your very own scoreboard. All of the label cards, stars, and chart paper is provide in the download. Don't worry about making this perfect! The scoreboard is just an extra touch to make this event fun and exciting.

Print out and assemble student booklets using a stapler. Remember to only print the pages you need. Have students create a baseball on the cover using a red crayon or marker. After each game students can write about the book they voted for. This is a great time to review how to write about what you read.

Now it is time to get to the games! For game one, you will need to have two books. Book covers can be printed off and put onto the scoreboard or you can just write the book title. Do what works best for you.
Read each book and have students vote on which book was the best. Add tallies to the scoreboard using Crayola markers. The book that had the most votes wins the game and moves on.
Continue with the same setup until your class has one book left for the championship game! The championship game will then be held against another class' book.

As a wrap up event, have students create a DIY pennant based on the book that they liked best. This could be an individual or partner project. Allow students to get creative with their pennants! Depending on the grade you teach, this would be a great time to ask students to discuss the story elements of the book. Students won't even realize they are really doing a mini book report!
The DIY pennants work great with any type of markers or crayons.

You can't go to a Championship Reading Event without taking home a few survivors. Send home students with a baseball bat pen, baseball tattoo, mini baseball rubber duckie, Double Bubble gum or baseball lollipop.
