This fall bring out the beer steins, toast to good friends and celebrate the best of Germany's traditional Oktoberfest right in your own backyard. This party, complete with a pretzel bar and a fun drinking game, is a great way to welcome the fall season with a distinct, German flair.
I have always loved attending the local Oktoberfest celebration in our town, but this year I wanted to bring the fun to our own backyard. Inspired by Bavaria's music, food, and beer I created a Biergarten for our monthly supper club celebration. Each month our friends take turns hosting a themed dinner celebration and an Oktoberfest party seemed like the perfect theme for our September supper club.
I started creating our own personal Biergarten in the backyard by hanging lights, Oktoberfest pennant banners and setting up a pretzel bar.
Old wine barrels with a long bar top served as the perfect focal point for the DIY Pretzel Bar. I used copper pipe and hooks to create a simple pretzel display. Guests could find everything they needed here from freshly baked pretzels, dipping sauces, and German beer. Yum!
Cute Oktoberfest pails were filled with Oktoberfest can sleeves, napkins, and coasters so guests could keep their drinks cold.
One of the best parts about attending an Oktoberfest celebration is sitting at long tables outdoors meeting new people and hanging out with friends. I set up tables in the backyard and covered them with white tablecloths as well as Blue and White Argyle Plastic Tablecloths. I kept the centerpieces simple with large round wood slices and fresh flowers in galvanized vases. I scattered a few of the pretzel stress toys and included caddies filled with a variety of German beer.
The Oktoberfest backdrop was the perfect place for friends to hang out, catch up and pose for photos. It's almost like we were actually in Munich for the celebration!
Guests could sample a variety of German beer to find their favorites. I created simple tasting boards with the DIY Unfinished Wood Paddle and blue spray paint. I placed clear shot glasses on the board and filled them with a sampling of beer. I used a white chalk marker to write down the different varieties so guests could keep track of their favorites.
After a delicious dinner of brats, German potatoes, and sauerkraut guests could enjoy apple strudel and Double Chocolate Pretzel Bark.
As the evening got underway we all gathered together and played the Oktoberfest Cheers and Beers Game I created for this party. We took turns testing our Oktoberfest trivia knowledge and toasting to the "drink if" cards.
This was such a fun evening with friends and was the perfect way to celebrate the best of Germany's world-famous festival.
