One of my favorite themes to teach is Apples. I love having apples for snack every day. I love making tasting graphs. I love making apple stamps. The smell all day Friday of cooking Applesauce. But the best part of Apple Week is watching my students become so engaged in what they are learning! I have read all about flipping a classroom, and thought I would give it a try.
I started by setting the backdrop up. I hung the Barnyard Backdrop over my word wall. It looks like we have been moved to an apple orchard. Once I had my background up I had to set the scene. I had to make it feel like we were in an actual apple orchard. When you are in an apple orchard, the first thing that is a requirement is apple trees. My backdrop didn't have any trees, so I had to make my own. I took a Classic Halloween Black Tree Stand Up and spray painted it brown. Then I took Green Tissue Pom-Pom Decorations and hot glued them to the branches. Finally, I added Mini Red Hanging Lanterns to make it look like there were apples in the tree. The tree has a stand, but I stapled it to a coat rack to give it a little bit more stability. Once I had my background set, I had to have a place to put all my teaching resources. So I took my sensory table, threw a red and white checkered table cloth over it. Then I had a place to hold my books and papers I have to have while teaching. I loved having this backdrop while I was teaching. I felt that it really had the kids engaged. I also dressed up as Johnny Appleseed. I wore my overalls and plaid. I also had a little pot to put on my head. I needed a bigger pot, mine was too small and kept falling off. When I wasn't teaching, I turned my area into a dramatic play center, complete with bushels of apples. My kids are loving playing in the apple orchard. I added a cash register and fruits/veggies from our kitchen. The vocabulary that they have gained from this week, blew me out of the water. I heard them talking about the parts of the apple and all the different things you can make from apples. This classroom flip added a lot of fun to our apple week!
