Handprint Apple Trees

Handprint Apple Trees

September is one of my favorite months in the classroom. Not only are our students ready to kick it into gear and the learning is really beginning to start, but my favorite theme to teach is in the middle of September. I LOVE teaching about Apples and Johnny Appleseed. One of my favorite books to read is “The Seasons of Arnold’s Apple Tree”. It goes through the seasons of the Apple Tree. A must have for any Primary Classroom.

One of my favorite activities to do with apples is to make hand print Apple Trees.

I start this lesson by reading the book "Arnold's Apple Tree", Then we sequence the seasons of his apple tree. This is where the craft comes into play. This craft was broken into four trees. Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall. Winter I paint my students hands with Brown Crayola Paint. Then we make handprints to make the trees limbs. Then we add snow. We put a little dab of glue on cotton balls, and stick them on the tree. Spring I painted their hands with Green Crayola Paint and make the leaves on our tree limbs. Then using our thumbs, we make the apple blossoms by pressing them in Magenta Crayola Paint, and adding them to the tree. Summer I painted their hands with Green Crayola Paint and make the leaves on our tree limbs. Then using our thumbs, we make the green apples by pressing them in Green Crayola Paint(with a little Yellow Crayola Paint mixed in), and adding them to the tree. Fall I painted their hands with Green Crayola Paint and make the leaves on our tree limbs. Then using our thumbs, we make the red apples by pressing them in Red Crayola Paint, and adding them to the tree. After we made our trees, we hung these in the hallway as an Apple Themed Bulletin Board. I printed the labels from a freebie that you can find here. These are so cute. And I have gotten so many compliments on them already!
