Alphabet Tree

Alphabet Tree

If you teach PreK and Kindergarten, you would agree that we spend a lot of time learning the letters and their sounds. Which, in turn, means we do a ton of activities to reinforce these skills. I have created a special bulletin board in my classroom devoted to the alphabet.

How We Did It: This was the easy part. I decided where I wanted my bulletin board to be and I assembled the Tropical Palm Tree Jointed Cut Out. Ta-Da! So Simple! Then, the fun started happening. The last few weeks I have been focusing on a letter of the alphabet per week. On Fridays, my aide and I helped my kiddos create the focus letter from the Lowercase Letters Craft Kit. We just love these letter crafts! Each kiddo gets a baggie and all the pieces are precut and precolored. All my kids have to do is glue it together! When they are all done, I pick one of the kids' crafts to put up on our tree. We display the rest of them on the hallway bulletin board.   Make it Interactive: When I first introduced the Alphabet tree, I read the book "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" to my kids. They LOVED the story, and have been singing it ever since. They love that we have our own chicka chicka boom boom tree in our room. During our "morning meeting", I go over to the Alphabet Tree and we go over each letter. We say the name of the letter, the sound of the letter and then the picture cue. Example for the letter M, we would say "M /m/ mitten". This is great for spiraling of the curriculum. This way we are going over what we have already taught, but it isn't redundant for the kids. They love seeing their work on the tree, and I often hear "that is MY apple A!"
