I love to teach about the four seasons during the fall. It is such a magical time here in Nebraska! And, I think it is easy for students to grasp the concept with the beautiful leaves falling from the trees. We have many great products to easily implement into your science curriculum.
I chose to teach one season a day to make sure students really had a grasp on each season. I started off each season by reading the very simple Season Readers. Each book is set up similar and contains just enough information to get students' minds flowing. One set of season readers includes 5 books of EACH season, which is great for small groups or to use for a writing resource. I especially liked that students could connect the tree on each cover to the trees on the Color Your Own Seasons Posters.
After reading the season reader, we made a quick list of activities or things we would see during the season of the day. Students then had a chance to use their creativity to illustrate the season on their Color Your Own Seasons Posters. I asked students to use their prior knowledge and new information learned to help add details to each season. For the fall season, I wanted to add in a little synonym work and asked students to write the synonym for fall as the title.
I love all the detail this student added to his poster, especially the sunglasses in summer.
For an extension, students completed the Seasons File Folder Center during rotations. This amazing set of science file folders are easy to prep and keep sorted. Each center is self-checking and uses fantastic real life photographs that help support all learners, especially ESL students. Check out how the envelope color matches the folder and each piece!
My students are obsessed with the Sticker Scenes. I love that each sticker scene is an extension to the concept that I have previously taught and it helps my ESL learners feel successful. They had a blast completing a sticker scene for each seasons and then partnering up to talk about what they see in each scene. This was a great way to add in speaking and listening skills plus cooperative learning. This would be a great time to add in writing, also!
