Teaching addition is a great opportunity to use manipulatives in the classroom. Students can work with small objects to count and find a sum! We used a couple different movable pieces in this lesson to make addition come alive.

As an introduction to addition, I really wanted to focus on the addition sign. We made our own addition signs by using foam cut as a plus sign and glued various objects to it. You could use anything to decorate it with! The goal was to make the addition sign a BIG deal so the students would remember what it means.
I lead the students through a series of activities to practice addition. First, we made an addition sentence using the fruit erasers and our addition craft. The students wrote the sum on the dry erase sleeve with a dry erase marker.
My students LOVED using the dominoes to practice addition. They counted the dots on the left and right side and then wrote an addition sentence using their plus sign.
Once the students started getting the hang of making addition sentences, the students copied the numbers on the dominoes to make additions sentences with the erasers. The students really enjoyed this addition lesson and I am excited to use this again next year!
