It's amazing how sometimes the smallest twists on activities have the biggest impact on student engagement. Students get so excited when using reading pointers, adding spiders into subtraction, using fireflies to make 10, or turning a math activity into a game!
To play this math game, each student will need a Dry Erase Number Line Sheet and a Frog Puffy Finger Puppet! How cute are these frog finger puppets?!
Students will roll a Learning Resources Dice in Dice to find 2 numbers to add. I'm a firm believer that you can never have too many dice and these Dice in Dice are always a big hit with my first graders! We love them!
The number on the inside of the dice will be the first part, and the number outside will be the second part. Students will use their number line and frog finger puppet to find the whole by starting their frog on the first part and counting on by hopping their frog to the second part. I teach my students to start on the greatest number first and then hop the second number. For example for 4 and 6, students would start their frog on the 6 and then hop 4 to make 10.
Students can record their answers on the Number Line Hop recording sheet. Download the Free Number Line Worksheet Printable here!
One of the things I love about having a variety of dice available is that you can easily change the dice to differentiate an activity. Instead of using the 6 sided dice in dice, you can use the 10-Sided Dice in Dice for students that are ready for addition problems with higher sums.
I love how adding some frogs and fun dice are quick and simple ways to makes adding on a number line so much more fun!
