5 Ideas for Indoor Recess

5 Ideas for Indoor Recess

Whether due to rain, the cold, or tons of snow there are always going to be indoor recess days during the school year. With so many days of inside recess, I thought I'd share some ideas of what I include in my inside recess tub. Yes, of course, you could watch a video but those only last for a little bit and truly, it doesn't get the wiggles out. Kids have to move! If they don't get those movement breaks, watch out! More than likely, anything you tell them will go in one ear and out the other. Here are some ideas I use frequently during indoor recess time.

Grab this amazing rolling cart to store all your inside recess options. Roll it into the classroom when you need it then store out of sight when you don't. Label it "Inside Recess!" I actually spray-painted the outside of my cart pink!

These Yoga Cards are great for getting the kids up, moving, and stretching. These are large cards which makes the poses easy to see! They also show kids from many different backgrounds, which I absolutely love!

Oldies but goodies are best for partner games because you don't have to do a lot of explaining. In addition, working in pairs may cut down on disagreements. These chess, backgammon, and chess game boards (all in one) are the best! And these hangman boards are perfect for word and phrase play.

Movement from side to side is important for kids. Not only does it get the wiggles out but it's also good for the brain. According to research, the processes your brain goes through for learning are the same processes your brain goes through when you move laterally and when your arms cross your body. Interesting, huh?! Use these hopscotch circles to encourage this movement. The kids will love it!
